Opinions on how to improve phantoms
I see a lot of phantom hate, and I feel like sharing my thoughts and how the phantom could be reworked into a better and more useful mob.
The phantom is a flying mob that only appears to attack a player if they haven't slept in 3 days, and they only drop phantom membranes (which are pretty much useless if you have mending on your elytra). They can be annoying to fight, though it's more of an inconvenience than it is a challenge. They only spawn at night, burn in daylight, and will stop appearing if the player sleeps.
I really like the idea of the phantom. A flying mob that only attacks sleep deprived players sounds dope, and I also think the phantoms have one of the coolest mob designs. But the execution of the phantom's implementation into the game could've been done better, and I want to share some of my thoughts on how it could be changed
- limit how often phantoms can spawn a night
One major problem with the mechanics of the phantom is that it discourages players from staying up at night, despite that being an important part of minecraft survival. Most hostile mobs only spawn on the surface at night or in a dark area shielded from the sun. In other words, night is the best way to hunt enemies. The phantoms can make it very annoying to do so, and don't drop anything worth the time it takes to kill them. Not only that, but they continually spawn and will persistently follow you, making it even more pointless to actually try fighting them than to just go to sleep.
I think that something which would make the phantom a lot better (at least in my opinion) is to limit the amount that can spawn a night. Instead of swarming the player, make the phantoms only able to spawn in one, two, or even three groups a night. Once the player has dealt with the phantoms, no more will spawn that night. The difference between phantoms continually spawning and other mobs is that 1. you can make safe areas where other mobs won't reach, while phantoms are impossible to avoid in any outside setting. 2. phantoms don't just spawn around, they will fly after and follow you no matter what, even if you don't engage with them.
Because of that, I think a limit to how much they can spawn a night would make them less of a pestilence and more of an added challenge if you don't sleep for a while.
- make phantom membranes useful in crafting
The phantom only drops phantom membranes. The phantom membrane can repair an elytra (like I said earlier, useless if you have mending) and brew slow falling potions. Overall, I'd consider it to be pretty useless. I think the phantom membrane could be utilized in crafting, but I'll be honest when I say I can't think of any good ideas for how to do so. The only thing I really came up with is maybe using it to make a new type of arrow, like one that's faster or has better range. I don't know, but there's potential for the phantom membrane
I know I've yapped a lot without much substance other than "to make phantom less bad make phantom good" but that's just how I convey my points, and I apologize lol
I am also not a genius, nor do I know anything about game design, so these ideas could be absolutely horrible. It's all my personal opinion, because I think the phantom is such a cool idea for a mob that could be changed to be a lot more impactful
