how did dog selectivity appear in your dogs behaviour?

i have a 2 year old husky, bolt. he has always been overly friendly, he thinks (or at least used to think) every dog on earth is his friend and i was told he could naturally grow out of it but i did and still do a lot of training to at least manage it.

it used to be that he would legit freak out if i didn’t let him meet a dog, but now he’s at a point he can mostly handle it with some treat persuasion and only cares if a dog comes too close.

he still meets some dogs sometimes, off leash dogs that just run up to us are avoidable but also he has a different expectation for greeting/playing in certain environments so sometimes he can meet a dog on leash and be fine. play dates in enclosed fields are usually our go to.

i knew when he turned 2 i would start to see him getting his “normal” personality, and this was the age i was told id know if how he is with other dogs will change and also that dog selectivity tended to appear in a lot of dogs after they turned 2.

there have been 3 dogs (actually all of them puppies of varying ages) he’s met since turning 2 that he’s been a bit iffy with, not aggressive but not. nice.

one was an off leash dog that suddenly ran to us and he did a little grumble and pinned it down, but he didn’t go to bite or anything thankfully. the next was his brothers foster sibling who on first meeting had a bit of a go at bolt but when they next saw each other off leash they were fine at first but then bolt was the one having a bit of a go at him (once again no biting but he was mounting and well yelling at him is the only way to describe it) and i separated them, he was fine with the other dogs in the same place. then today we met a much younger puppy on our way out of the vets and the puppy was very excited and peed but this time i saw bolts body tense a bit i think right when the puppy peed and felt the growl rumble through him before it even came out so got him away from the pup.

i’m not sure exactly what this is, whether it’s sort of a normal type of dog selectivity or if he’s being an ass. i also worry that maybe me trying to train him to be more neutral to dogs has turned into this.

i dont really know how dog selectivity appears in dogs though, my other dog can be a bit selective and i’d say he acts similarly to bolt in these situations but it’s hard to compare because they’re very different visually.
