I'm 18M looking for advice on how to help my bipolar 18F severely depressed gf
I’m an 18M and my girlfriend is 18F. We’ve been together for 10 months and attend the same school.
My girlfriend is currently dealing with severe depression, largely due to a very toxic and mentally abusive home environment. She also has bipolar disorder, but her parents do not allow her to seek professional help, which makes managing her mental health extremely difficult. She has a past history of self-harm as well.
Recently, she’s been feeling so overwhelmed that she has started to withdraw emotionally and shut me out. At one point, she tried to break up with me, but later said that she felt ''suffocated and cannot break up with me''. From my perspective, this push–pull behavior seems to be linked to how intense her depression has become. Also she has stated how there's a void inside her and that now she does not crave to interact with me. The only thing she feels is sadness and pain now
Neither of us is financially or personally independent yet, so we both still rely on our parents. Unfortunately, her parents are mentally abusive and make her home life very stressful, which limits what she can do to improve her situation.
I’ve tried to support her in every way I know how, but being young and inexperienced, I feel like I don’t know how to actually help in a meaningful or healthy way. I care about her deeply, but I’m starting to feel lost and unsure of what the right thing to do is.
On top of this, she comes from a very conservative family, so meeting in person is extremely difficult. Lately, even communication through text or calls has reduced significantly.
What can I realistically do to support her without making her situation worse? How do I handle this situation in a healthy way? I fear she might try to break up again. Please help, I’m in desperate need of good positive advice.
Ps. Her mental wellbeing and happiness is of the most importance to me and knowing her and our relationship a break up will worsen her condition. She has nobody else to rely on
