My personal investment account reached $4 million this year.

Investing

My investment account has gained 101% this year.

I’m grateful to the market for giving me a chance to be part of such a great run. I’ve heard it so many times when the market’s hot, everyone’s a genius. And it’s true when things are going well most people make money. But what really matters is who can actually hold onto those gains and put that growing capital to work through compounding. Managing wealth is clearly the harder and more important skill.

I’m glad I’ve done well so far. I’m 35, not married, no kids. I own a house with no mortgage or debt. I’ve got a retirement account and some ETFs I plan to hold long term. I’m not thinking about early retirement at this point.

What’s it like when your account passes a million?

Since hitting the $3 million mark the most noticeable thing is how I see the digits when I open my account. It just looks different. Before, watching the numbers bounce around every day was fun. Now it’s kind of messy and no matter how much they move it doesn’t seem to make a huge difference to the total. And honestly, it hasn’t really changed my day to day life. I still go to the same restaurants, wear the same brands, shop at the same grocery store. I only really feel it with big stuff like buying a house or a car but I’m set on those for now.

The other shift is that lately I keep wondering what’s the next goal for this number? Or should I even use money as the measure anymore? What should I use to track my life from here?

When your investment account or net worth hits the target you once dreamed of… did you feel this way too?
