I am OPT student received local government job offer, any realistic path to sponsorship?

Hi all,

I’m an F-1 student on OPT (Sept 2025–Aug 2026). I received an offer from a local county government office in South Carolina for a contract/procurement role. I’d be the only international employee.

They didn’t ask about visa sponsorship during interviews, but they did complete a background check before extending the offer. I know cap-exempt H-1B doesn’t apply since this isn’t a research role, and the county typically doesn’t sponsor H-1B.

My OPT clock is ticking, so I’m trying to decide: • How do I bring up visa sponsorship without hurting the offer? • Is it better to accept the offer and then discuss visa options, or raise it before accepting? • Has anyone navigated this with a county or municipal employer?

Any advice or real experiences would be appreciated. Thanks.
