When you tear do you downsize to what you where wearing before tear?

So I was stretching my ear from a 12g to 10g and my ear started bleeding. When downsizing do I go back to 12g or do I go to a 14g? I know I need to let it heal for a month and or more but I just don't know what to downsize to.
