Adventures with A320 printer

GENERAL

I got a thermal mini printer for Christmas. I was so happy because I wanted to connect it to Fenix A320. Unfortunately it works only via bluetooth with the app on the phone. But I was not surrendering. I was determined to make it work so my struggle begun. My first approach was to try to connect the printer directly to PC. It didn't work. It's not recognized as a printer but as two devices: unknown and health monitor (?). Then I started to check if there is a driver or any software that could work. I found web app on gitlab and it actually worked. It connected to my printer directly and could print images and text. So I followed briefly this path but this was a deadend. I would have to write my own printer driver based on the gitlab code for printer. I decided that it would be my last option. Ok so the other option was to print through phone. None of the apps I initially checked had option to send directly to the app. But then I found a promising app. It works a bit different then other because it creates print service on the phone. I thought that I'm saved! I'll create a network printer via phone. How naive I was... App developer provides a plugin that should allow to connect via IP to the print server but my PC didnnot see this as a printer. I spent a day to try different setting combinations but without any success. There was only one last thing to check. Another plugin for app that allows to automatically print a file from a folder that plugin is monitoring. So the new plan was: A320 has to print to file, file has to be transfered automatically to my phone, plugin must see new file and send it to printer app. I started with file transfer. Google drive and OneDrive were a backup but I decided to use FTP. Luckily I have an file management app that can create ftp server so it was easy. But now I need to print to file to ftp... After quick googling I found a PDF creator app that serves as printer. And it can save files to FTP! From there it was quick. After two days of trials I finally have working printer. The system works like this: Fenix A320 uses PDF printer that is set as default printer. This PDF printer has option to save to file without prompting for a target location or file name. It just drops pdf to predefined folder. Second thing it does that after creating file it sends it to the ftp location on my phone. Then printer app plugin grabs a file and sends it to printer app and then it finally prints. All of that to get little piece of paper with three tiny lines of METAR.... Totally worth it.
