Unbearable Heat in South-Facing Bedroom (Central FL) - Need advice

Hi everyone,

I live in Central Florida (Kissimmee area), and my bedroom is virtually unlivable during the day.

The Situation:

  • Location: Central Florida (Hot/Humid).
  • Orientation: My room is South-facing with a large window that gets direct sun for most of the day.
  • The Problem: The room heats up drastically compared to the rest of the house. I recently touched the glass, and it was burning hot.

What I have tried (and failed): I currently have VELIMAX Static Cling Blackout Film installed on the inside of the glass. I realized this was a mistake because the black film seems to be absorbing the heat and turning the glass into a radiator.

What we are considering doing: My dad and I are debating a few solutions to block the heat from the outside, but I need a sanity check on which one is safe and effective:

  1. Rigid Foam Board (The "Dad Plan"): My dad wants to buy "Thermal Poly" (Pink/Blue Polystyrene insulation board), cut it to size, and essentially plug the window from the outside.
    • My Concern: If we put this tight against the glass, will it cause the window to crack from thermal shock? Also, won't the Florida sun destroy pink foam in a few months?
    • Alternative: Should we use Foil-Faced Polyiso (Rmax) instead so it reflects the sun?
  2. Shade Sail : We looked into installing a sun shade sail to shade the window, but the installation seems tricky for our specific wall and might look weird.

I don't want to do anything out of the ordinary since we're renting the house.

My Question: Has anyone in a similar climate successfully cooled down a south-facing room? I'm ok with blocking the view permanently. What some suggestion.

Also I forgot to mention to counter the heat I installed a window AC that also a factor.

Thanks in advance!
