Are timeshares as hard to get out of as the commercials say?

My brother has a timeshare and has never really had anything bad to say. If he decides to get rid of it, is it going to be as bad as the commercials say? They make it sound like you’ve made a deal with the devil that you or future generations of your family can never get out of.
