Am I the only one that couldn't care less about holidays?
Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is fine. I just wouldn’t care if it were treated like any normal day. For me, it is just another day. The only real difference is that everyone else treats it as special, which means I am expected to follow rules and rituals I did not choose.
Sure, I like the day off. But I use it the same way I use any other day off, doing normal things. This New Year’s Eve I am planning to go to bed at my usual time. The same goes for Easter, Halloween, or any other holiday.
I do not really understand why certain behaviors are tied to specific dates. Why give gifts on Christmas when you could do that on any other day? Why suddenly be nicer to people just because the calendar says so? People say it is about the Christmas spirit, but that feels arbitrary to me.
Sometimes it feels like I am being negative for rejecting holidays, but I do not think that is fair. Using a holiday as an excuse to be close to your family or to be kind to others feels forced. I am not close with my family the rest of the year, so I do not see why I should suddenly pretend to be just because a group of people decided December 25th should be special.
Am I the only one?
