First go around with warrior in classic, struggling tanking or even understanding the class in general from a tank perspective

Question

So to preface this, I've levelled 4 other characters to 60 over the progression of the new anniversary server realms, raided on all of them, played everything from meme specs to pumper specs, theory crafted on my own, and overall had tons of fun. I feel like I have completely understood the capabilities of every class that I have played so far. I'm a total altoholic, I love learning all the strengths and weaknesses of every class because I love to PVP and its good to understand your enemy. There are 3 classes I have never played at all to max level; warrior, mage, and as an alliance player, obviously shaman.

With under a month left in classic I figured i might as well level up another character just for something to do, and the decision on the class came to me while playing the TBC test server: a warrior absolutely rocked me, both of us with maxed out glad gear gemmed for resilience and the works, 100-0 i couldnt cast, i didnt get a chance to move, nothing. He saw me, and then i became dead. And then after thinking about it, it seemed attractive to make a class that was good in PVP, but that would also be able to tank in PVE considering i feel like there's always a shortage of tanks and healers, and because of that it seems like upgrades are primarily given to tanks/heals in guild settings. Not only that, but the pure ability to find a group to accomplish what YOU as an individual want to accomplish is extremely attractive. For example, on my 4 level 60 characters, I only have been able to get a decent group together to complete ony attune twice, both being on my resto druid and my hpal. My warlock and rogue will likely not be able to because i started them both around P4 going into P5 and as a DPS you generally dont dictate what the group does or doesnt do, you're along for the ride. So, if after running the entirety of BRD and someone has to go to work, the prospect of resetting and doing jailbreak doesnt seem to get people excited to help you after you spent a whole dungeon helping them. Oh well, it is what it is, I get that the majority of players just zug zug and play DPS and dont make an attempt to contribute to tanking or healing shortages even if their class has those capabilities.

This is where my dilemma is at:

I'm currently level 50 on this character, and I'm honestly not sure how you actually tank on this guy in classic at least, against more than one mob. I know its going to change a bit for TBC because there isnt really any such thing as fury prot (that my research has turned up, if I'm wrong please correct me with proof so I can learn about it) and all these intricate builds, every guide seems to pull me in a different direction, so I'm here to kind of feel out a good dungeoning build for finishing the leveling journey.

I've gone dual spec to test the waters, and last night and the night before I ran Maraudon and both seemed like trainwrecks. Not wipefests or anything but trying to hold aggro was a real hastle.

My first issue is that when in deep prot or a even a fury prot style build, I seem to be doing mediocrely okay at generating threat in single target, I think a boss only got ripped off me once or twice in all the runs which I instantly pulled back with a taunt. The instant that there's a second mob involved, I feel like i'm not generating enough threat in either build, and subsequently, not enough rage. I've tried sword and board, dual wield, and 2handing and i just feel constantly starved for threat, partially because I'm doing extremely low damage, which then gets exacerbated by now the mobs aren't attacking me to help me generate rage through zerk rage or my block talent, or i feel like I'm chasing them all around, and it just seems to spiral out of control from there. luckily i had a good group DPS wise who were cool, calm, and collected gamers that could just burst everything down (mage, hunter, warlock) and a thick pally keeping me up. but i hardly contributed at all to overall damage with either build (if everyone was doing an average of ~150, i was doing maybe 50 which puts me at roughly 10% damage, which is to say the least horrifically bad and as a DPS I'd be very bummed out that this is the only tank the group could find)

I might get one cleave or bloodthirst off per fight after using my battleshouts, etc. because I'm terribly rage starved. I've read about running daggers to help with generating rage but is that honestly that much better than playing the class as i would assume it was intended, using swords/maces/axes? As in, are we talking 20%+ additional rage generation from that? Or is it one of the min max things that wouldn't hold me back from average, every day tanking? I've heard it mentioned in some guides, but not personally seen it or been aware of it.

I understand my stats aren't quite set up and developed like they would be at 60 yet, so i thought maybe the prot and/or fury routes just werent viable until i hit that point and geared up a tad more, and i respecced today after reset. I ran down the Arms tree into sweeping strikes, and then went over to fury and put 15 points in. In my mind that would be a much better dungeon spec.

Actions that I have taken include (Is there anything more I can do here?)

- re-macroing stance dances for each different ability because of my build change and rotation additions/subtractions (now that i've gone arms with tactical mastery i'm hoping that i dont waste as much rage as i feel like i was prior, I've seen 20 videos on youtube saying you dont need tac mastery but i dont see how someone can tank without it as a warrior. Furthermore, adding things like overpower/sweeping strikes to my arsenal)

- changing my talents to something more pure DPS but that seems like it could support a healthier rage economy (down to sweeping strikes in arms tree, 15 points in fury currently due to level)

- added /startattack line to all of my macros because I've noticed sometimes my character just stands there and stares at it and i dont realize it. It is currently listed on all of my abilities.

Actions I've been thinking about taking

- using things like dragonbreath chili or immolation oil to help with AOE threat (I dont have engi as I've mostly been using this character to farm for money so far, but i may pick up engi before prepatch)

- I may macro in to my initial charge move a marking macro to establish a kill target for the group to assist me with not getting aggro ripped (This seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure if even that will work when i have classes like mages/locks/hunters that benefit the most mana-efficiency wise by using their AOE. I've seen multiple videos that say oh just hit everything with sunder and you're fine or whatever and it seems like all the sunders revenges and shouts and cleaves in the world wont minimize the issues I'm having while tanking)

- If it was earlier in the phases, I may have considered picking up a Skullflame shield or even the Force Reactive Disk or whatever its called with a shield spike to help me with aggro generation on multiple mobs. Moneywise, i dont think it's worth it at this point but if I came across one cheap, i could possibly get into it.

Things I'm still trying to understand

1) I've heard people say/write in guides to use your shouts and that they generate threat. Do my improved shouts generate more threat or are they all the same amount? Is the only threat modifier on those shouts my current stance when using them(so to get max threat out of them i have to be in defensive stance)? because they dont seem to do much threat wise. If my Rank 5 Battle shout does 39 threat, and my Rank 4 Demo shout is 32 rage, is that split up amongst all mobs I'm currently in combat with? Because in my opinion, that seems like a terrible low efficiency rage trap at my current levels of those abilities. 71 rage split amongst 3 mobs is ~24 threat per mob for 20 rage (1.183 threat/rage) which seems abysmally poor economy compared to Rank 4 Sunder Armor (220 threat/15 rage = 14.66 threat/rage) for holding mobs on me. I get keeping battle shout up and just using demo shout on melee heavy packs to keep heals down, but a lot of guides suggest using it every single pull for generation.

2) Dual wield, sword and board, or 2H? I recently picked up thrash blade and have a green "of the bear" sword, the 2h mace from princess in mara, and i have a green shield that seems decent for my current level. What is going to help me keep tighter mob groups item wise? I went into sword specialization in the Arms tree, so i'm thinking DW or thrash and shield. Whats your opinion?

3) My current rotation that I'm thinking of using looks like this: (battle stance)Charge, (berserker stance) bloodrage/zerk rage macroed into a single button, (battle stance) pop sweeping strikes, (defensive stance) rage spenders*(i.e. HS/Cleave/Sunder)* and shouts. I know for sure I'm going to overcap Tactical Mastery on rage between my charge and swap to bloodrage/zerker rage which i dont think is good for threat, but then I was also thinking about going charge/bloodrage alone/sweeping strikes all in battle stance, and then going to Berserker stance and using berserker rage, but if i go that route do i generate more threat with the 3% crit chance on SS/whirlwind/cleave spam or am i wasting that global's worth of rage generation when i should be focused on getting to def stance and cleaving and berserker rage at another time? Or do i need to have berserker rage early into my rotation to assist with early generation? It seems wasteful to use it at the end of a trash pull because the damage to self rage generation

4) Why do some people swear by heroic strike and others say absolutely never to use it? is it a " if you're dual wielding, use it, if not don't" kind of thing because of the OH hit penalty being removed when queueing it? Does it do weapon damage plus its additional damage? I mean it seems like it generates more threat than sunder for the same cost if thats the case, the only difference being sunder affects the whole group if you have a lot of physical damage and HS helps burn the mobs down if you're the primary physical damage dealer.

5) If I dual wield, is Revenge going to proc often enough without block chance to actually be useful for picking up threat? Or is that my tradeoff for doing more AOE dps that i lose a lot of the heavy threat generators i rely on as a tank?

6) If I'm going to be spamming sunder armor or cleave or HS or whatever, how do i generate enough rage to hit 3 separate mobs at least once over the course of the fight to maintain threat? Does my current rotation generate enough rage to allow that, or have i just never noticed that all warriors are walking gold sinks that use rage potions/immo potions/dragonsbreath chili/ on hit effects and enchants as much as humanly possible just to keep them effective at dungeon tanking? Because i feel like i've played with some rock solid tanks who never lost threat even on massive pulls when i would DPS or heal.

I recognize this is kind of a multi-pronged problem where not only am I not being efficient in generating the rage, but I also don't know how to spend it effectively for the situation I'm in at certain parts of dungeons. Any help you can give me is much appreciated. I'm frustrated because I know this class is much better than how I'm currently playing it, and I know many people think that all warriors do is zug zug but honestly this is incredibly confusing and intricate to get it to work how you want it to, and I appreciate the challenge. I'm brand new to this class and trying to find a main to consider for TBC, and this currently is one of the classes I'm exploring
