Jim Carey is the reason “Millennial Humour” is so bad.

Media / Internet

Ok ok I’m not trying to step on any toes here honestly. No intention of being rude or anything just something that I’ve been thinking about and honestly it seems true. Ok so millennials - generally people who’s childhood was spent in the 90s. Nowadays when we look at the middle aged millennials, most people (including myself) see their very maximalist often hyper-physical with little comedic nuance jokes. Now these over the top eye crossing squeaky voice humour jokes and or video sketches often results in the pushing of the very popular sentiment that a lot of these millennials are just not funny. Now my friends we must think, is there some rule within a humans life that once you reach your mid thirties until your late 40s that you just develop a quite socially abnormal obscure form of humour that most look on with cringed faces like you just squeezed a lemon down their throat? Well the answer of course to that question is NO. So if the answer is NO then where does this hyper-physical face bending strange obsurd form of comedy come from. It’s not a coincidence - that’s impossible. It is simply boils down to who was the number 1 comedian and comedy actor during the 90s and partially the early 2000s? Jim Carey. Jim Carey wow don’t know where to start. I mean look, I don’t hate the guy. I mean I don’t hate people for not being funny that would make me quite a hateful person if I was like that. However Jim and his form of comedy is almost identical to the “millennial humour” we see mocked online so often. Both involve -

  • Hyper-physical comedy (face movements, eye movements, general body movements, and impressions)
  • Maximalist in noise and physical comedy (Absurdly loud impressions, squeaking your voice to tune a certain tone to make something funnier - it doesn’t it just makes it irritating and cringeworthy).
  • Little to no comedic writing involved in the jokes. Often is just random = funny. Thank you for reading all of that hope you see my correlation! Again no feelings meant to be hurt of course. I believe what I stated above is quite consequential to modern day humour aswell. As this type of humour pushed gen Z people to be much more nonchalant with their humour and sort of killed a lot of impression comedy and physical comedy because of the cringe of the millennial humour. Anyway that’s another tangent for another time. Change My mind.
