Is there any point in fight enemies?

Got this game on sale and have been loving the story so far about halfway through the game i think at the school bit but it seems kinda pointless fighting anything as you dont get anything from beating anything and just lose resources

Have been avoiding enemies for a while now just wondering if i'll miss anything by not fighting them?
