Ok since my last post was well received I’ll do another one I’ll also be taking suggestions for other nations because these drawings are fast to draw and very fun

So here we have the eagle tyrants

Haliaeetyranninae is a speculative subfamily of tyrannosauroids derived from a Lythronax-like ancestor. Unlike the lineage leading to Tyrannosaurus rex, haliaeetyrannines achieved large body size earlier in tyrannosaur evolution and diversified as dominant, omnivorous megafauna across North America.

By occupying apex and near-apex niches first, haliaeetyrannines ecologically excluded more derived, hypercarnivorous tyrannosaurines, preventing T. rex ancestors from successfully radiating on the continent.

Defining characteristics

1. Early gigantism

	•	Achieved large body sizes before late tyrannosaurines

	•	Adults commonly ranged from:

	•	8–11 m in length

	•	Multi-ton body mass

	•	This early dominance prevented later tyrannosaur lineages from establishing territory

2. Retained and enlarged forelimbs

	•	Unlike later tyrannosaurines:

	•	Arms remained proportionally large

	•	Some genera evolved even more robust forelimbs

	•	Functions included:

	•	Manipulation of food

	•	Digging for roots or carcasses

	•	Grappling prey

	•	Close-range intraspecific combat

This retained versatility reduced reliance on extreme bite specialization.

3. Reinforced cranial horns for ramming

	•	Low, thick cranial horns or bosses

	•	Not ornamental:

	•	Used for head-to-head ramming

	•	Shoving contests

	•	Dominance disputes

	•	Parallels:

	•	Musk oxen

	•	Bison

	•	Pachycephalosaurs

This contrasts with Sakuraraptoridean display-focused ornamentation.

4. Full-body feathering

	•	Dense feather coverage across most of the body

	•	Likely functions:

	•	Thermoregulation

	•	Seasonal insulation

	•	Visual signaling at close range

	•	Indicates:

	•	Higher metabolic demands

	•	More active foraging lifestyle than classic tyrannosaurines

5. Extreme dietary flexibility

Haliaeetyrannines were broad omnivores, ecologically comparable to modern black and brown bears.

Diet included:

	•	Carrion (primary food source)

	•	Fish

	•	Large prey (opportunistic)

	•	Small animals

	•	Eggs

	•	Roots, tubers, fruits, and tough vegetation

This flexibility allowed:

	•	High population density

	•	Survival during prey crashes

	•	Long-term dominance across diverse habitats

Ecology and behavior

	•	Ecological role: Dominant omnivorous megafauna

	•	Habitat use: Forests, floodplains, river systems, coastal margins

	•	Social behavior: Likely solitary or loosely territorial

	•	Conflict resolution: Physical dominance via ramming and size, not visual display

Unlike hypercarnivorous tyrannosaurines, haliaeetyrannines did not rely on exclusive access to large prey, making them more resilient competitors.

Competitive exclusion of T. rex ancestors

In this timeline:

	•	Haliaeetyrannines:

	•	Achieved size dominance earlier

	•	Occupied apex and mesopredator niches

	•	Controlled carrion resources

	•	Derived tyrannosaurines:

	•	Could not outcompete them

	•	Were blocked from establishing stable populations in North America

	•	Remained restricted or failed to radiate

As a result, the Tyrannosaurus rex lineage never becomes ecologically viable on the continent.
