Furnace stacks

When making a furnace stack, where should I place the input, fuel and output belt. My current design has three belt running down the middle with the center being coal and the other belts being copper ore and then the outside belts are for output. I have seen designs with coal and ore on the same belt and was wondering which on was more efficient?
