Will I ever make friends?
How likely is it for an autistic person who’s struggled their whole life with friendships to eventually form close ones?
I’m 27 and I’ve always had trouble building stable, long-lasting friendships. I was only diagnosed with autism about six months ago, so in hindsight I probably never had the right tools or approach. For a few years I completely gave up and accepted the idea that I’d be alone forever, but that’s been really hard to live with, and I do need people in my life.
I want to add that I’m not antisocial. I actually enjoy talking to people and can socialize fairly easily, but I really struggle to turn those interactions into deep, lasting relationships. Connections tend to stay surface-level or fade away, and I’m not sure what I’m missing or doing wrong.
Do you think it’s still realistic for me to eventually build a few close friendships?
