Attempting to figure out how use coordinate inputs for finding and displaying existing data.
(Note: I am using Google Sheets for the sake of share-ability with others, if any solutions are not available inside of that spreadsheet program, please include that information)
I have a rather basic understanding of Excel/Sheets and am working on creating roleplaying game system. I have been trying to reduce my reliance on huge sections of cells devoted only to data lookup or overly long if statements by trying to make a way to lookup my data given coordinates.
My current largest problem is trying to work on creating blocks that can lookup a section of player skills giving only a few tiles of input. I've been trying to approach looking for a way to make a way to look it up in a grid, or an "array of arrays" in programming. So that if I inputted 0,0 into a spot it would return "Blunt" and its value in two separate spots, and if I inputted 4,1 it would return "Finesse" and its value in those spots.
(Current stat sheet I want to pull from, visual formatting I don't want to change)
My previous solution used a very large selection of data points I had to manually change by hand, writing in every stat name to one section, and adding a multiplier to another section that would return a value as each was set already to pull from a specific cell.
(Rough draft of what I'd rather have instead)
I want to find this kind of solution so that when making additional actions in my system, I can directly pull a player's skill (which is calculated already on the sheet) without an overly long if/else chain or something as large as my previous "stats section" solution, which would drastically reduce the amount of work required when making edits to names or creating new actions.
