Old lady wants to know more about Fallout

Friends, I am ready to play the Fallout video game after seeing the television series. However, I'm really old and have never played this type of game, so I have questions. Where do you purchase the game? Does it come in a digital format? What is the purpose of the game? No snarky responses, please.
