Question about online play

So, I currently play Rocket League and I can play matches online against other people and I don't have PS Plus.

But when I am browsing games on the PS Store, those that require online play say PS Plus required.

To me, this seems like we generally require PS Plus to play online. But how the is it not a requirement for Rocket League? And why don't other games with online play don't just work without it?
