EFS scam from nebraskan (402) area code

hi guys, i'm new to the business. i work for an average sized brokerage and today we found out that one of our 3rd shift workers gave an EFS check to someone claiming to be a driver for one of our friend carriers. they did not verify the driver's number given by the carrier nor the appointment times. she just gave him the money code.

come morning and we find out this was not true. the guy called back two more times, each time trying to get another EFS check.

after researching the number i have found that it is a landline and the phone carrier is neutral tandem, but i could not find any further information out about the number or its owner.

i'm wondering if anybody may have any information about scammers like this, if they're spoofing numbers or if they're part of larger groups and how exactly they're doing this so if it were to happen again but to me, i'd know how to spot it and prevent it.
