Does the jail/prison system make sense?

I am new so please be nice, i am genuinely asking as someone who is trying to get into the game.

I was doing a Defense contract that went sideways because it was hard to tell who was friendly and who was bad when some of the AI just runs in front of you pointing a gun at you. Lets just say i got a crime stat of 4 and got killed by the AI. Next thing I know i am in prison with 10 hours.

Mining is so buggy, the tool sometimes does not work and for some reason only works past depth 9. At least in my server. So you know... People came and beat me up for my mined supplies. I tried again looked around, did the boring mining until i couldn't fill my backpack and only had a few hours taken off.

Okay so now instead of being in game, doing something not really fun like prison. I was felt forced to logout. Does this system work? Am i missing something? Does everyone single time i play i have to worry about perhaps not being able to play for 10+ hours because of a single 15 minutes of mistake?

This is a genuine question and I'm just looking for some insight from the community.
