Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is a show my best friend got me suckered into two years ago. With season 4 finally on the horizon for next season, I figured now is the perfect time to host a rewatch for the first three seasons so people who've seen it can get a refresher while the people who haven't can catch up in time for new content for this incredibly sweet shounen series.
#What is Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun?
Fourteen-year-old Iruma Suzuki has been unfortunate all his life, having to work to earn money for his irresponsible parents despite being underage. One day, he finds out that his parents sold him to the demon Sullivan. However, Iruma's worries about what will become of him are soon relieved, for Sullivan merely wants a grandchild, pampering him and making him attend the demon school Babyls.
At first, Iruma tries to keep a low profile in fear of his peers discovering that he is human. Unfortunately, this ends up being more difficult than he expected. It turns out that Sullivan himself is the chairman of the school, and everyone expects him to become the next Demon King!
Iruma immediately finds himself in an outrageous situation when he has to chant a forbidden spell in front of the entire school. With this, Iruma instantly earns a reputation he does not want. Even so, he is bound to be roped into more bizarre circumstances.
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is (so far) a 65-episode fantasy/comedy show with some action throughout by Bandai Namco Pictures adapting part of the manga of the same name, with the upcoming season 4 set to pick up where season 3 left off.
If you're a fan of shows with wacky & colorful characters, I can't recommend this show enough for you. The hijinks these guys get up to throughout the series so far range from good fun to genuine and heartwarming, and it does have some decent action whenever the show does action arcs.
#Wait, what even IS a rewatch?
Rewatches on this sub are effectively the weekly airing discussion threads, but for older shows and usually paced at one-per-day rather than one-per-week. These are open to both people who haven't seen the show before as well as those who have – any discussion of events past that day's given episode must be spoiler tagged using r/anime's spoiler tag format, so as to not ruin the first-timers' experience. Reading their reactions or having those reactions yourself is half the fun of a rewatch, you know?
r/anime's spoiler tag format is as follows:
[Iruma-kun]>!Ameri is best girl.!<
Which becomes [Iruma-kun]>!Ameri is best girl.!< when you don't break the formatting on purpose like I just did. Do note that if you are a source reader and want to comment spoilers for later in the manga than the anime covers, you'll want to specify [Hell's Paradise manga] in the brackets instead of just the series name.
As for how to participate, just pick whatever you're comfortable with. Some people do bullet point live reactions, some people write essays, some just show up to share memes or fanart and then dip, some solely respond to other participants rather than having a top-level comment on their own – anything goes as long as you're not being rude!
So, plan ahead on what you're going to do, watch the episodes each day on your own, and be ready to jump in any time after the threads get posted!
#What's the schedule?
We don't have an exact date for when season 4 will start, just that it's going to be in April, so my idea is to start on January 20th. Accounting for break days between each season, this will put the overall discussion thread at the end on March 31st, so we can guarantee we've finished the entire show before April. I don't want to assume season 4 will start on, say, April 6th and schedule the rewatch like that just to find out it's actually starting on April 2nd. That would completely defeat the purpose of this rewatch being catch-up ahead of season 4, lol.
I may add a few extra break days between seasons if we get an exact start date while we're still discussing season 1 so as to keep the gap between the end of the rewatch and the start of season 4 as small as possible, but the start date won't change.
Also, I intend to post the threads each day at 5 pm EST, the same time I posted this thread.
#I'm in, where can I watch this show?
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu, although it looks like Hulu only has the first two seasons.
I look forward to going to demon school with you all in a few weeks!
