How replayable is Ankh? Worth it for my groups?
I’m thinking about buying Ankh: Gods of Egypt, but before pulling the trigger I’d love to hear some opinions from people who have played it a lot.
My main questions:
- How replayable is Ankh in your experience?
- How often does it actually hit the table for you?
- Would you say it has strong strategic depth, or does it start feeling “solved” after a while?
- I’m considering picking up all expansions I can find ,do they meaningfully increase replayability?
- Do the expansions significantly improve the game, or are they more “nice to have” rather than essential?
About my gaming groups:
- 2-player gaming (most frequent): I live with my girlfriend and we play board games together quite often, so it’s important that the game works well at 2 players and doesn’t feel like a compromised experience.
- Casual group (very occasional): I have two friends whose most complex game so far has been Risk, and they enjoy it a lot. I’d like to use Ankh as a way to slowly introduce them to something deeper and more strategic. We only meet maybe once every month or two.
- Heavier gamers (rare): Sometimes I play with a larger group (usually 4–5, occasionally up to 6). They’re big board game fans and collectively own 200+ games. I’d probably bring Ankh there only occasionally if they agree
- Work group (very rare): Another group from work that meets maybe once every 1–2 months, if that.
Given all that:
Would you buy Ankh if you were in my place?
Does it justify its cost and shelf space with this kind of play frequency?
I’m also considering Inis as an alternative — how do you think Inis would fit my groups compared to Ankh, especially at 2 players and with mixed-experience players?
