Mostly as a Streaming Device: Refurb Steam Deck OLED vs. Rog Ally Xbox (Weaker one)
Hello all. I'm looking to get a handheld mostly for streaming within my house and I'll be posting this on both the subreddits to get some in-depth opinions by owners.
Becoming a new dad soon, I'll obviously have less time to play games but a lot of dad's, I've been talking to have said get a handheld in order to play in different parenting scenarios.
So I am mostly looking for a handheld to stream both my PC and my PS5 gameplay too. I am not that worried about on the go playing, since I would probably just take my Switch 2 anyways. I would stream in handheld format, and I would like to dock the device to stream to my 4k TV as well in order to play on the couch and be more present.
I actually had a steam deck lcd before but didn't use it much. I just sold it like 6 months ago! Below are some of my perceived advantages and disadvantages of both.
Steam Deck OLED (refurbished ~$440)
- I found the comfort to be good but not great.
- Screen size was lacking for me, but OLED is .5 inches larger.
- OS was nice, but being locked out of gamepass games (subscription up in December 2026 now) kind of sucked.
- I found PS5 streaming to be better than PC streaming. Both latency and ease of use.... I have 2 screens, main monitor being ultrawide. Having to switch resolutions to stream on steam every time was frustrating. (Not sure this would be different on ally)
- 90hz plus that extra .5 in seems nice
Ally Xbox Weaker White Model ($340 new from marketplace reseller)
- Better resolution, screen size, and HZ for streaming
- Controller like grip
- Capability of duel boot
- Cheaper in my case
That's all I admittedly have for the ally. I don't need the super GPU one for my use cases. But I don't find myself leaning more towards it than the steam deck.
Any insights?
