Has an invention ever been successfully hidden from the rest of the world?

In some fiction, like the movie Ant Man, there is the trope where a brilliant scientist invents something that they deem dangerous and hide it from the rest of the world. I'm wondering if that has ever been successfully done, or if anyone has ever tried and failed.
