Is there something I’m missing with my understanding of our treaties with Greenland?

I thought we had nearly free range to deploy troops in Greenland for defensive purposes and even maintain a military base there. What benefit does having Greenland as a protectorate/territory(or whatever the proper term would be) bring militarily that I’m not understanding?
