*Safari* (1976), directed by Alain Nauroy, is one of the most elusive and enigmatic artifacts of 1970s French underground cinema. Long rumored, rarely screened, and sparsely documented, the film occupies a gray zone between lost feature, reissue, and assemblage—its very existence often debated among collectors and historians.

Rather than presenting a conventional narrative, *Safari* appears to have been constructed by splicing together material from multiple unrelated productions. Shifts in image quality, color grading, and continuity are frequent, creating visible seams between segments and reinforcing the sense that this is a deliberately—or perhaps pragmatically—assembled work. Some footage is believed to originate from projects that never received theatrical release, while other elements may overlap with alternate titles or later reuses in different films.

This patchwork structure produces narrative gaps and tonal inconsistencies that resist traditional interpretation. Instead, *Safari* functions as a moving archive: a collage of fragments reflecting the production practices of a period when distribution, censorship, and market pressures often dictated creative assembly. The result is less a singular “film” than a time capsule of circulating images, repurposed reels, and vanished projects.

From an archival perspective, *Safari* is significant precisely because of its instability. It exemplifies how underground cinema sometimes survived not through preservation, but through recombination—footage migrating across titles, regions, and formats. For historians, the film raises questions about authorship, versioning, and what it means to define a work when sources are incomplete or mutable.

Viewed today, *Safari* stands as a cult curiosity and a reminder of cinema’s material fragility in the pre-digital era. Its value lies not in narrative cohesion, but in its role as evidence of an informal, often invisible filmmaking economy—one where films could be assembled, altered, and partially lost, yet still leave a trace.
