Pros/cons to a late arrival at Post?
I’m work for a small foreign affairs agency (not State Department). I’ve received my first foreign assignment abroad but my PCS date is somewhat flexible and based on my personal choice; I’m just required to arrive at my new duty station anytime between August and October 2026.
I want to maximize training opportunities in DC before departing, particularly for language study. What are the social / career / practical / etc. implications of arriving at Post “late” (ie. after August, which is when I hear most new arrivals join the embassy community)? Are there any downsides to arriving late that outweigh the perceived benefits of a few extra weeks of full-time language study?
