I'm a private duty pediatric nurse and I feel guilty for calling in sick so much

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management

So to preface, I'm a young woman that works in home care as a nurse. I work one on one with a pediatric patient Monday through Wednesday 7a to 7p. I've been doing this for about half a year now.

I've had to call in sick several times since I've been working here on top of taking a leave of absence in October for my wedding and honey moon. I was sick with covid in August for an entire week and out with strep throat for a day in September. I was out again for a day or two right before my wedding with a respiratory infection, and again for a week right after my honey moon with RSV that developed into a sinus infection. I had a stomach bug a few weeks ago and was out for a day. This week I am out AGAIN with a respiratory infection and have been out all week.

My client's grandmother gave me a call upset because she claims the company hasn't been notifying her of my absences. I actually called her Monday morning to make sure my company reached out to them because this has happened in the past, and they did in fact get a hold of them. I assumed since they got a hold of them Monday, than they likely did yesterday and today as well (which obviously was not the case).

The grandmother said she needs "reliable nurses" who can take her granddaughter to school and that I needed to send a replacement nurse if I was going to be sick. I informed her that I was independently contracted with the company as a private duty nurse and it was up to them to provide the staffing. I also explained that I work with her grand daughter at home around all her siblings and cousins as well as with her at school, so I am exposed to a lot of illness and can't help getting sick. She was still upset but was more understanding and reasonable to talk to after this.

I told the grandma I would get ahold of the on-call person to see what was going on. Turns out, they have been notifying the family, but the dad frequently doesn't answer the phone or returns calls. Now grandma is the primary contact and hopefully this won't happen again. I really am not supposed to be reaching out to the client, it is the company that is supposed to do it. I did inform the company that I reached out on Monday because of this same issue in the past and they actually seemed grateful that I did considering all the communication issues.

Anyways, I'm also getting a grief from my husband about calling in this week. It's never directly getting upset at me, but he'll get really silent or just say things like, "I would prefer it if you didn't call in" with a frown on his face. He asked me to clean some stuff around the house if I was going to call in, which kind of defeats the purpose of resting. I said I'd do what I can. I'm always really supportive of him when he's not feeling well and basically baby him, so it really sucks that he's not the same with me.

Idk TLDR I can't help but feel bad for calling in so much and needed to vent on this. I know I'm calling in for legitimate reasons but part of me wonders if I should have just forced myself to go to work and just wore a mask/took a bunch of meds to get through my day.
