AITA for turning my boyfriend’s "surprise date" into a surprise picnic for everyone?

Advice Needed

I (26F) have been listening to Two Hot Takes for ages and I finally have something that’s low stakes but has my friend group split, so here we go. My boyfriend (27M) is a sweet guy but he’s very into being "the planner." He loves a surprise, he loves an itinerary, he loves saying "trust me" with this smug little grin. Usually it’s cute. Last weekend he told me to dress comfy and be ready at noon because he had a surprise date planned. I was actually excited because work has been a lot and I’ve been craving something simple and fun. We get in the car and he’s acting like we’re going to the Met Gala, won’t tell me where we’re going, keeps checking his phone. I’m thinking maybe a little day trip, maybe a movie, idk.

We pull into a park parking lot. Cool. Then he opens the trunk and I see it: a full on romantic setup. Like, a real picnic basket, a blanket, a little charcuterie board situation, the fancy sodas, even those tiny forks no one knows how to use. He had clearly been watching too many "boyfriend does it right" videos. I’m smiling because it’s genuinely adorable, but here’s the thing. This park is packed. Like family reunion packed. There’s a kids soccer tournament, a dog birthday party (yes, with hats), and about 400 people doing laps like it’s the Olympics of walking slowly. He is carrying the basket like a proud Victorian man and I suddenly realize we are about to sit down in the only patch of grass with zero shade, directly next to a kids team screaming "DEFENSE" every 10 seconds. I tried to gently steer him toward a quieter spot but he was locked in. He found a spot, laid everything out, and looked so pleased with himself.

Then the first interruption happened. A golden retriever escaped and ran straight through our blanket like it was a runway. The owner was mortified, my boyfriend was frozen in place holding a grape like it was evidence in a trial. I laughed, helped catch the dog, brushed off the blanket, we reset. Two minutes later a toddler waddles over and just stands there staring at our food like it’s a museum exhibit. The mom says "sorry" but doesn’t move the kid. My boyfriend tries to be polite but I can see his soul leaving his body. Then a group of teenagers walks by and one of them goes, "Yo this is kinda fire" and I lost it. It was like the universe was determined to make this picnic a public event.

So here’s where I might be the jerk. Instead of being mad, I leaned into it. I grabbed the extra sodas and offered them to the mom with the toddler and the dog owner as a joke, like "we have too much anyway." They laughed, said thanks, and suddenly it became this weird wholesome moment where people were chatting with us. A couple nearby even asked where we got the little forks and my boyfriend had to admit he ordered them online. It turned into a mini social hour. My boyfriend did not enjoy this. On the way home he said I "hijacked" his surprise date and turned it into me being the neighborhood mayor, and that he felt embarrassed because he put effort in and it ended up feeling like a picnic for strangers. I told him I loved the effort, but I also didn’t want him stressed all afternoon because the park was chaotic. He says I could’ve just focused on us and ignored everyone. I say ignoring a toddler staring into your salami is not a real option.

So AITA for making his romantic surprise into an accidental community picnic instead of keeping it just us?
