can i enter uk with an eta while my student visa is pending?

I unfortunately booked a flight before getting my visa now i’m stuck with no visa and a flight coming up soon. I was wondering if it’s possible to enter as a tourist with an eta or should i just reschedule. Or i can even use the flight as a transit flight… Flights have now almost tripled what they were so i’m trying my hardest to keep it alive.
