Chapter One: Summer Returns

Amara pressed her sunglasses higher on the bridge of her nose as the coastal breeze teased the hem of her sundress. Savannah, Georgia in July was criminally hot, but it wasn’t just the sun making her sweat today. She hadn’t been back to her best friend Rachel’s family lake house since college, and now, five years later, everything was exactly the same—except for him.

“Amara?” Rachel called from the porch. “You coming inside or just going to melt out there?”

“Give me a second,” she said, her eyes locked on the figure leaning against the wooden deck railing—broad shoulders, white t-shirt hugging his chest, a cold beer in hand.

Liam.

Rachel’s older brother. The reason Amara used to “accidentally” show up to family barbecues wearing just a bit more lip gloss than usual.

But that was years ago.

Now he was taller, tanner, a little scruffier. His smile was still that same lazy curve that suggested he knew exactly what he was doing to her.

“Amara,” he said with a nod, voice smooth and low. “Long time.”

She tilted her head. “Didn’t know you were going to be here.”

He took a slow sip of his drink. “Would’ve shown up sooner if I knew you were.”

Chapter Two: Firelight and Secrets

That night, the firepit crackled as everyone drank and shared old stories. Amara sat cross-legged on a lounge chair, sipping wine, laughing—until she noticed him again. Liam was watching her. Not the way a friend of the family would watch. Not the way her best friend’s brother should. It was the kind of look that lingered. Unapologetic. Heated.

Later, when the others went inside, Amara stayed to enjoy the fire alone.

Or so she thought.

“You always this beautiful by firelight?” Liam’s voice came from behind her.

She turned slowly, heart thudding. “You always sneak up on women at midnight?”

He stepped closer, the glow dancing over his sharp jawline. “Only the ones I can’t stop thinking about.”

She laughed, unsure if it was from nerves or something else entirely. “Don’t flirt with me, Liam. Rachel would kill us both.”

He smiled. “Then I’ll make sure she never finds out.”

Before she could reply, he was in front of her—too close. His hand brushed hers, and it felt like a lightning strike. Everything in her screamed to back away. Everything else begged her to lean in.

“I used to have the biggest crush on you,” he whispered, eyes never leaving hers.

“Used to?” she asked, barely breathing.

His fingers traced the curve of her wrist. “Not sure it ever stopped.”

Chapter Three: Touch and Tension

The days passed in slow-burning tension. Liam would always find a way to be near her—brushing past her in the kitchen, his hand warm at the small of her back, his gaze lingering just a second too long.

One afternoon, while Rachel was out running errands, Amara found herself alone on the back porch again. Liam emerged from the lake, dripping water, shirtless, wearing nothing but swim trunks that clung entirely too well.

“You know,” he said, toweling off, “you keep looking at me like that, I’m going to start thinking you want something.”

Amara arched a brow. “You’re very confident for someone who hasn’t made a move.”

He grinned, dropping the towel. “Oh, I’ve made plenty of moves. You’re just playing hard to get.”

“I’m not playing,” she whispered as he closed the distance between them.

When he kissed her, it wasn’t tentative. It was claiming. His hands cradled her jaw, hers tangled in his wet hair, their bodies pressing together like they’d waited years for that exact moment.

They didn’t go all the way. Not yet.

But her body was still burning hours later.

Chapter Four: The Edge of Something Dangerous

“I don’t do secrets,” she told him one night, standing in the kitchen in one of Rachel’s borrowed t-shirts.

“You sure?” he asked, stepping behind her, lips brushing the curve of her neck. “Because you’re really good at sneaking around with me.”

She bit her lip as his hands slid down her arms. “This is wrong.”

“Feels right,” he murmured, turning her to face him.

And then, God help her, she let him kiss her again.

This time deeper. Slower.

Their connection wasn’t just lust. It was heat and gravity and history and need. Amara could feel it in the way his hands memorized her curves, in the breathless way he said her name against her skin.

She didn’t stop him when he lifted her onto the counter.

Didn’t stop herself when she pulled his shirt over his head.

They still didn’t go too far. But they went far enough to know this wasn’t a game anymore.

Chapter Five: What Comes Next

Eventually, Rachel noticed something. The looks. The tension. The way Amara would smile after Liam left a room.

She cornered her on the dock one morning. “Amara... are you hooking up with my brother?”

Amara didn’t lie.

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.”

Rachel stared at her for a long second. Then she shrugged.

“As long as he doesn’t break your heart,” she said, “you’ve got my blessing.”

That night, Amara told Liam she wanted more.

He didn’t hesitate.

Epilogue: Still Burning

A year later, they came back to the lake house. This time as a couple. No more secrets. No more hiding.

Liam still looked at her like she was fire.

Amara still felt like melting every time he touched her.

Only now, she didn’t have to hold back.

And neither did he.
