My elderly neighbor tried to "flirt" and it turned into the most wholesome accidental friendship

So I’ve lived in the same apartment building for a few years and I do this little evening loop walk when I’m trying to decompress. Same route, same trees, same corner where the sidewalk is always uneven and tries to take me out. A few months ago I started noticing this older guy who sits on the bench near the entrance most days. Like, older older, gray hair, tidy jacket, newspaper energy. He’d smile when I passed, then one day he said, "You walk with purpose." I laughed and said something like, "I’m just trying not to trip." After that he’d say hi now and then, nothing weird.

Then last week he hits me with, "If I was twenty years younger I’d ask you to dinner." I kind of froze because my brain did that fast math of, is this creepy, is this harmless, do I need to sprint home. He must have seen my face because he immediately goes, "Don’t worry, I’m old enough to be your dad." And without thinking I said, "Sir, you’re old enough to be my grandpa." It came out so fast and so blunt that I wanted to dissolve into the sidewalk. He stared at me for a second and then he started laughing, like real belly laughing, wheezing a little, holding his chest. I panicked and started apologizing, which made him laugh harder. People were walking by and looking at us like we were having a very specific kind of argument.

When he finally caught his breath he said, "Fair. That’s fair. Thank you for keeping me humble." Then he stood up and did this little dramatic bow, like he was in a play, and said, "In that case, may I offer you a peppermint instead, Granddaughter." He pulled a candy out of his pocket like a magician and I lost it. I took the peppermint, we both kept laughing, and then he told me his name and that he sits there because it’s the only spot in the building where he gets sun in the afternoon. He also said he started talking to me because I "look stressed but not in a rude way," which is honestly the most accurate description of me I’ve ever heard.

Anyway, now we do this thing where if I see him on the bench I stop for like 3 minutes and he gives me a peppermint and a tiny piece of gossip about the building. Like who keeps stealing the free newspapers, or which dog is secretly the boss of the courtyard. Yesterday he asked if my "Granddaughter duties" include teaching him how to change the font size on his phone because he "refuses to be defeated by a tiny letter." I helped him and he acted like I saved his life. He told me I have "good energy" and then warned me not to date anyone who says women are "too emotional" because those men "want a mommy, not a partner." I nearly choked because this man is out here giving better dating advice than half the internet.

It was such a small silly moment, but it made me realize how much I tense up in public because I’m always on alert, and how nice it is when something unexpectedly harmless happens instead. I know not every older guy who comments is safe or funny, but this one turned out to be like a peppermint-powered grandpa I didn’t know I needed.
