AITAH for telling my best friend about being SA’d by her brother and being blamed afterward?
I’m posting here because im being accused of character assassination, and I genuinely dont know if I did something wrong.
A close friend of mine sexually assaulted me multiple times (we’re both male). it involved repeated violations of consent including groping and touching the groin area which left me deeply distressed and confused, especially because I trusted him. Since then, i can’t even let anyone touch me. The thought of it makes me feel disgusted, and I struggle even imagining physical contact with anyone.
There is also a mutual friend male involved. During the time the assaults were happening, I kept confiding in him about what I was going through. I eventually asked him to confront the assaulter and tell him to stop. He said he would see, after he confronted him, the assaulter’s behavior toward me changed completely. He became hostile and said several very mean things to me.
Because of this, i went to my best friend who is also the assaulter's sister and asked her if I had done something wrong. i valued our friendship a lot which is one of the reasons I didn’t file a case or take legal action. During that same conversation i also told her about the sexual assault. She immediately started blaming me, saying something like that couldn’t have happened and that I was lying.
There’s another related issue. The mutual friend I confided in has always been jealous of me. In the past, during a heated argument, I confronted him about how he talks about our female friends, he speaks badly about their character and once even threatened his ex by saying that if she wouldn’t be with him, he would go to her house blah blah.
After I told my best friend about the SA, she insisted that we all confront the assaulter together. She also insisted on involving the mutual friend, even though I told her there was no need for him to be there. Eventually we confronted the assaulter in front of both of them. He denied everything, swore he didn’t do anything, and acted like he didn’t even understand why I was bringing it up. However, when I mentioned the exact incidents, he started visibly shaking and his body language changed completely. I even suggested a polygraph test (I know it’s not accurate but I was desperate). Throughout this confrontation his sister kept telling me to shut up.
The mutual friend immediately took his side, and both he and the assaulter’s sister demanded proof something I obviously didn’t have. During the confrontation, the sister brought up my earlier statement about the mutual friend not respecting women and seeing them as objects. This led to him starting a fight with me, and all three of them turned against me.
Afterward, I broke down crying in front of the mutual friend. He told me that he actually believed me. He said that when he confronted the assaulter earlier, he hadn’t denied anything and that his body language was obvious. However he still refused to support me saying it was too late now. The last time I spoke to the assaulter, he told me that I had broken his heart and that I shouldn’t have done this. He said I should have come to him privately and talked things out instead. I believe me not bringing the topic up after the first time led to him believing that i was interested.
Since then all three of them have been spreading rumors about me, including to our school and university friends. Everyone took their side even those who dont even know the assaulter personally. Im sure they've twisted my words claimed I said things I never did and bad mouthed me to others.
AITAH for speaking up about what happened to me even though I don’t have physical evidence?
