Experiences with pharmacogenetic testing and medication tolerability?

Discussion

Hi everyone,

I’m interested in pharmacogenetic (genetic) testing in the context of psychiatric medication tolerability, and I’m looking for general experiences rather than advice.

I’m not asking what medications to take or for dosing guidance — just whether anyone has found genetic testing helpful in understanding side effects, metabolism, or why certain medications didn’t agree with them.

Specifically:

•	Did testing provide any useful insight into medication tolerability?

•	Was it helpful for narrowing options or avoiding side-effect issues?

•	Did you do testing through a clinician or independently, and did that affect how useful it was?

I know results aren’t deterministic and don’t replace clinical judgement — I’m just trying to understand whether people found it practically informative rather than just interesting on paper.

Thanks in advance.
