Make Up Work. What Works for You?

Classroom Management & Strategies

For many, this week is the end of the 1st Semester. I always use this week to allow students to do any missing work they either didn't do by choice or due to absence. I start the week off by explaining this to them and saying "I can't force you to do your work. But everyone makes choices". I let them know that come Friday, I do not want anyone coming to my room or emailing me asking "what can I do to bring my grade up?" I always have ids that still do and my response is "Nothing. You had a full week to do your work". I always email parents of kids who are failing or close to failing at the start of the week so I don't have to hear the "well you never told me my kid is failing". (Having receipts has saved me dozens of times). What methods do you guys use to help persuade students to be motivated to do their work? Or do you just go by the "actions have consequences" method?
