How to collect more Senna souls

Does anyone know how to collect more of Senna's mist when she takes down enemies (her passive)? Sometimes when I kill minions, it drops, but other times it doesn't at all. What's the trick to make it drop 100% of the time? I'm kinda confused about how her mist works.
