Treat your body like a temple, my defense of the word of wisdom
Before becoming a member of this church, I was always very strict about what I put into my body because of the idea of treating the body as a temple.
I know that many new members have problems with the Word of Wisdom, to the point that even pages close to the church suggest softening it.
But if some people have problems, it's precisely because they're addictive substances. That's precisely why I've never been attracted to drinking coffee, tea, and alcohol.
I take great care of my health, and when science confirms faith, we should no longer have any doubts about why certain commandments were given. Drinking coffee causes dark circles under the eyes and ruins your sleeping, drinking alcohol damages the skin (and destroys the liver). Hot drinks, in general, significantly increase the risk of throat and intestinal cancer. For example, I like hot chocolate, but I let it cool before drinking for this reason.
And the same argument can be extended to the Old Testament commandments regarding pork and seafood, which are full of parasites. And that's why I don't eat them either.
The Word of Wisdom actually includes other rules that few people know about, but they are linked to a different historical context, where pioneers moved from state to state, there was a shortage of meat, cereals were easy to store, etc.
But these commandments were inspired by the Prophet 200 years ago, in a context where food was rationed due to scarcity, but it was genuine. Today, this is no longer so obvious. There are so many new chemical additives and ultra-processed foods that lead to obesity, diabetes, cancer, etc.
I know that, precisely because they are addictive, this might be difficult for many. And I know that many, even church members, innocently consume many foods that are harmful to their health.
But I pray that the Church not only maintains the Word of Wisdom, but also updates it by at least providing guidelines on a health code that considers many of the foods that unfortunately fill supermarket shelves today as foods to be avoided.
