How I fixed RX 9070 XT driver timeout issue

Tips & Info

I was encountering the driver timeout issue for months for a fresh high end PC (9800X3D, RX 9070 XT, 64GB DDR5, etc.) and could not find a fix, using DDU, installing driver only, no Adrenalin app, undervolting GPU, lowering clocks, you name it. Nothing seemed to help and I was going for an RMA now.

However, I managed to stumble upon this old post in Battlefield 4 subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield_4/comments/1xzzn4/tdrdelay_10_fixed_my_crashes_since_last_patch/

I read the comments and thought, this actually makes sense as to why the drivers would time out and hang my pc for around half a minute and everything going back to normal afterwards.

I applied the fix:

  1. Simply go to your registry: Start --> Run --> Type in "Regedit"
  1. Go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers" and create a key of type "DWORD (32-bit)" and name "TdrDelay" with a value of 10 as Decimal value.
  1. Reboot and play :)

Windows essentially has a timeout protection if your GPU does not respond to protect against black screens and freezes, so when your CPU does not receive a response from GPU it "restarts" the GPU to prevent your PC hanging.

I applied this fix and so far 0 driver timeouts since doing it.

Hope this helps anyone else searching :)
