I don't like my job anymore and it annoys me. What can I do to make things a bit better?
As the title suggests, I've fallen out of love for my job. Not because of the people, not because of office politics or anything like that. It's the things that I work on.
I will preface to say that I do get paid well and I'm remote so I'm not complaining about the company because they are very good people. I'm really just asking for advice on how to make the workday more enjoyable.
Essentially, the issue(s) I've found and grind my gears to no end etc, etc. is that there is no version control in sight anywhere (except the old v4,v6,v7New, etc.), there is no kind of automated testing anywhere in sight, most of the business logic is either in a HUGE legacy program that only one person understands (the owner) and no one but him touches or in MSSQL stored procedures and bat files. Also, the we don't use reusable components even though a lot of what we do as custom development work is copying over components from other clients and fitting it to the current clients needs. But we can't create custom components for our web portal because we also have a custom web framework that only uses XML as a way of creating views and no one touches the framework either. There's also VERY little documentation, like anywhere.
Now, I have figured out pretty much everything and know where things are and I can get a lot of work done. But it's tedious, it's manual and I hate doing it. For some custom projects I start for clients, I integrate everything I know about the SDLC and push that and create simple code where I am the only one working on the codebase. I use a standard programming language (I like python so that), I use git to version control, I use gitea (local version) to version my project and I use Gitea actions to perform automated testing before deploying to the servers I need. This is fun to me and feels like I'm doing real software development work because it doesn't feel cumbersome and manual, it just feels like I'm creating features and pushing them.
On another note, I also am the account rep for two of our clients and I do plenty of other work for other clients so meetings are pretty much every day.
The owner is very willing to change things if they improve productivity and ease developer workload because he knows we have the problem that we can't scale but I'm just not experienced enough to know where to start or how to propose a project to handle these issues I'm seeing. So my question is: does anyone have advice on how to improve my situation at this company or any general guidelines for how I can reduce manual and tedious work so I can enjoy my work more?
