[KCD2] Does the writing get better later in the game?
Let me be 10000% clear to the diehard fans that I don't think the writing is like unforgivable dogshit and that you're a bad person for enjoying these games or anything. I am not expecting KCD2 to be the pinnacle of reflecting believable, natural interactions and total historical accuracy. I'm still planning to continue playing it through, barring some kind of Dark Souls boss handing my ass to me or game breaking bugs.
When I fired KCD2 up, I was coming off the tail of watching an extended cut of major cutscenes from the first game to make sure I wasn't going in completely blind on the story until now, and I was really impressed with so many of the interactions and how HUMAN the characters felt. The back and forth between Hanush, Radzig, Henry, the priest, etc. following the sack of Skalitz was one of my favorite scenes that I can remember. Great acting on Radzig's part, less so on the priest, but again, nothing is perfect. With all the praise the sequel has gotten especially, I fully expected it to have improved on nearly every aspect of the previous game and was looking forward to a fun, goofy, slightly historical piece of fiction to unfold.
With all that said, the expository dialogue in the very beginning is so laughably bad that it had me apologising to my partner for having to witness it next to me. I physically cringed as my teenage fanfiction reading experiences came rushing back. I know Henry and Hans didn't just meet last week because I watched them flirt for an entire fucking game, so why did they explain so much information to each other that they already knew? Why was there SO much lore dropped right away? WHY WERE HENRY'S MEMORIES IN THIRD PERSON? And for gods sake I'm already so tired of Hans' little catchphrase, like I know he's a cornball rich kid who is utterly out of touch but I'm fighting for my life every time he repeats it. So. Fucking. Clumsy.
Without spoilers, can anyone let me know if it picks back up soon, or should I temper expectations from here on? I'm capable of blowing past the rough parts for the sake of overall payoff and enjoyment.
