Flatmate Talking to Themselves

Communication

Hi. I (25F) live in a flat with two others (26M, 25M). We didn’t know each other before moving in, but 25M (who is autistic) is starting to show some really concerning traits that need to be addressed, but I have no idea how to address them. We’re not close (I promise I have tried, trying to arrange trips to the pub, walks, offering to grab things from the shops, but have always been turned down). I always try to talk to him when I see him.

Firstly, the flatmate talks to himself. All the time. From the moment he wakes up at about 6:00am to when he leaves for work at about 7:30, he’s talking (more shouting) to himself, regularly waking me and my other flatmate up in the process. When he gets back from work, he talks to himself from the moment he walks through the door (usually about 18:30), until he goes to sleep at about midnight. There’s no respite from it. It’s just a constant stream of burbling, shouting, and cackling. Now, I do completely understand that this may be one of the ways he’s stimming, or releasing some tension after his day at work, but the constant noise is really starting to affect me and my other flatmate, partly because it is so loud that it constantly prevents us from sleeping, but also because he will randomly start screeching or cackling madly to himself. It’s really unsettling, especially when you’re not expecting it. I’ve tried earplugs to sleep in, but they make me feel dizzy. The other issue is that if he’s in a communal area in the flat, like the kitchen, and you walk in whilst he’s talking to himself, he will stare you down until you leave. He takes over the kitchen for approximately two hours every evening. Me and my other flatmate have learned to work around him, but it’s not viable. He’s also recently taken to play fighting in the kitchen with a person who isn’t there.

The other issue is his lack of hygiene. He doesn’t use washing up liquid, laundry detergent, and he constantly leaves his bedroom door open. His room smells musty and mouldy, and he smells, too. I know he showers, but I don’t think he uses any kind of products. His towels have turned brown because they’re so filthy. A few months ago, I realised I was having serious digestive problems. I have since worked out that I can completely avoid these problems by not touching light switches or taps, and instead use my arms or wrists instead. I’ve been okay since purposely making these adjustments.
