Taylor Port as a gift
Hello, this is my first time posting here.
In a few weeks a Black friend of mine has their birthday. I haven't really kept in touch with them for a while as both our lives were busy, but I managed to fit it into my schedule.
One of my first memories is buying them a Taylor Port Red wine. For context I moved to the US from an Easy Asian country and they asked me to get that bottle. I didn't know what it was so it took me couple of hours going around different alcohol stores to buy it. After the purchase I delivered it to her without disclosing the trouble. So I strongly associated that wine with my friend, but I don't think they have much connection to that bottle (I think, they did say they enjoyed it).
So once I got invited to the birthday event a couple days ago, I thought getting that same bottle would be a nice gesture. However upon researching I found out it's commonly associated with Black people because of marketing and history with the Black Panther movement(? I'm not entire sure if I understood it) and now I'm worried it be weird if I suddenly gift something that's stereotyped. Other gift options I could think of based on their interests are much more difficult to obtain so the wine is like my best option.
Would it come off as weird if I suddenly gift something that's stereotypically associated with Black people? (I guess the first thing is to ask is "is Taylor Port wine associated with Black people?" But regardless I do want to hear opinions)
