I was going down a hill backward while the car was accidentally still in Drive. It made a "weird noise" and then the engine died.
Symptoms & What I’ve tried so far:
Dashboard/Shifter: Initially, the dash was stuck on "D4" even when I moved the shifter to Park. I found the shifter cable under the hood; it was still attached to the lever, but I had to move the lever manually to get the dash to show "P".
The "Bulb Check": When I turn the key to ON, the D4 light comes on briefly and then goes off, which seems normal.
Electronics: The backup lights do work when I manually move the lever to Reverse under the hood, so the range sensor seems to be somewhat functional.
Starting Issue: When I turn the key, I hear rapid clicking a few times right before the key is fully turned.
Attempted Fixes: I have tightened the battery cables and tried to jump-start the car, but it still just makes the rapid clicking noise and won't crank.
Question: Since the dash shows "P" and the backup lights work, but it still won't start with a jump, did I likely jam the starter/flywheel or damage the Neutral Safety Switch internally when I rolled backward? What should I check next?
