How to reset a corrupted map in Project Zomboid (or remove a wrong map mod)
Hey survivors,
if your Project Zomboid map is corrupted or you accidentally enabled a map mod in an existing save, there’s a simple fix that doesn’t require deleting the whole save.
The solution
Project Zomboid stores map chunks in separate files. You only need to delete the map files, not the entire save.
Steps
-
Close the game.
-
Go to your save folder: C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid\Saves
Then open the folder of your save.
Inside the save folder, delete ONLY the files that contain map_ followed by numbers (for example: map_123_456.bin).
Do NOT delete anything else (players, vehicles, world settings, etc.).
Launch the game and load the save.
What happens?
The game will detect that the map save files are missing and will automatically regenerate the map.
Your character, skills, inventory, and most other progress will remain intact, while the world map is freshly rebuilt.
When is this useful?
- Corrupted or glitched map chunks
- Black/unloaded areas
- Accidentally loaded a map mod on an existing save
- Removing a map mod and wanting a clean map reset
Always make a backup before deleting files, just in case.
Hope this helps someone.
PS:
This also works in multiplayer.
Go to: C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid\Saves\Multiplayer
Open the folder with your server name (the one without _player in the name) and delete the same map_XXXX_YYYY files there.
Leave everything else untouched and restart the server.
