Need health insurance that actually covers Accutane + labs for my son.

Retirement

Hi everyone, I’m looking for clear guidance because I’m completely overwhelmed by the insurance system.

My situation

•	I’m 60 years old

•	Retired

•	$0 income

•	Living in Florida

•	Need health insurance for me and my son

•	My son needs Accutane (isotretinoin)

•	This includes:

•	Dermatologist visits

•	Monthly lab work

•	Prescription coverage

•	Prior authorization / iPLEDGE requirements

I’m not talking about anything extreme — just Accutane and the standard labs that go with it.

⸻

What I’m trying to figure out

I need a plan that:

•	Truly covers Accutane

•	Pays for monthly labs

•	Doesn’t leave us with surprise bills

•	Has a wide provider network (not super restrictive)

⸻

Questions I need answered

  1. Medicaid vs ACA Marketplace (Florida-specific)

    • With $0 income in Florida, what is realistically the best option?

    • I know Florida did not expand Medicaid, so:

    • Can someone my age actually qualify?

    • If we do qualify, does Florida Medicaid reliably cover Accutane + labs?

    • If Medicaid is not realistic, is an ACA Marketplace plan the better route?

  2. Accutane coverage in real life

    • Which option (Medicaid or ACA) is least painful for:

    • Prior authorizations

    • Monthly labs actually being paid

    • Not getting stuck mid-treatment due to denials

    • Has anyone successfully done Accutane on:

    • Florida Medicaid?

    • Florida ACA plans?

  3. ACA plans — what tier actually makes sense?

If ACA is the answer:

•	Is Silver better than Bronze because of cost-sharing reductions?

•	Is Gold worth it for frequent labs and prescriptions?

•	Which tier minimizes out-of-pocket costs for ongoing care?

4. Insurance companies to target or avoid

Looking for plans with:

•	Decent drug coverage

•	Less resistance to Accutane approvals

•	Wide provider networks

Examples I’m seeing:

•	Blue Cross Blue Shield

•	Ambetter

•	Molina

•	Oscar

•	Aetna

•	UnitedHealthcare

Are any of these known to be better or worse specifically for Accutane and labs?

  1. Provider network concerns

    • Which insurers in Florida tend to have the widest networks?

    • I want flexibility with dermatologists, labs, and specialists — not a plan that locks us into one system.

  2. Things I should watch out for

    • Any hidden pitfalls with:

    • Formularies

    • Lab billing

    • Prior authorizations

    • Coverage suddenly stopping mid-treatment

    • Anything you wish you knew before starting Accutane on insurance?

⸻

Why I’m asking

I’m trying to do this right and avoid:

•	Massive out-of-pocket costs

•	Coverage that looks good “on paper” but fails in practice

•	Surprise denials once treatment starts

If you’ve been through Accutane on Florida Medicaid or ACA plans, work in healthcare/insurance, or are navigating low/no income coverage in Florida — I’d really appreciate your insight.

Thanks in advance. This system is exhausting.
