In decentralized markets, it also determines whether traders can trust the system.**a**

Risk management governs the moments that matter most: which price sources are used as input to the mark price, how maximum leverage is set and managed, and what happens when positions need to be reduced during periods of volatility. Yet on many DeFi platforms, these decisions occur offchain, enforced by opaque systems that traders cannot audit or verify.

Decibel removes that uncertainty. Its risk engine is fully onchain and governs core protocol functions, including auto-deleveraging logic, mark price computation, and market parameterization.

In other words, you don’t have to trust how Decibel will behave; you can verify it.

## The Problem With Offchain Risk Engines

Many platforms that claim decentralization still rely on offchain risk management. These systems introduce opacity, discretionary intervention, and operational fragility, particularly during periods of volatility.

Auto-deleveraging illustrates this clearly. On many platforms, ADL logic is handled offchain, leaving traders unable to verify how the algorithm will select positions. When markets move quickly, traders are forced to trust processes they cannot see or audit.

This uncertainty erodes trust and creates unpriced risk, often with no recourse.

## Decibel’s Fully Onchain Approach

Decibel’s risk logic, knobs, and triggers are embedded directly into the protocol.

Decibel’s onchain risk engine enforces:

* Deterministic ADL logic: Position reductions follow transparent, rule-based criteria executed onchain.
* Transparent mark price computation: Mark prices are derived from verifiable inputs, with onchain logic for monitoring price sources.
* Publicly defined market parameters: Leverage limits, open interest caps, and ADL thresholds are encoded per market and applied uniformly.

Smart contracts execute all risk actions and are independently verifiable onchain.

A fully onchain system, however, is only as strong as the analysis that goes into forming those onchain algorithms and settings. Decibel has been working tirelessly to stress test its assumptions against historical events and forward-looking scenarios to ensure risk parameters remain robust under real market conditions.

## What This Delivers

For traders:

* Predictable, rule-based risk outcomes
* Verifiable pricing and funding inputs
* Transparent ADL behavior

For builders:

* Auditable, composable risk infrastructure – Build your own systems on top or rely on Decibel’s foundation. Want to increase leverage for your users above and beyond what Decibel offers? With builder codes and some creative engineering, anything is possible.
* A stable foundation for advanced trading products and custom experiences

Risk controls behave consistently under stress, without offchain dependencies.

## Trust, Enforced in Code

Risk management always involves tradeoffs. Decibel does not eliminate mechanisms like ADL or margin controls. It makes them explicit.

By enforcing risk logic onchain, Decibel ensures traders understand how the system behaves before volatility arrives. Trust is placed in code, not discretion.
