Should we judge characters for one single thing?

Community Discussion

Started to wonder about that because both Jonathan from Stranger Things and Tyler from 13 Reasons Why secretly took private photos of the girl they were in love with when they were like 16. Even though Tyler keeps struggling for various reasons (don't remember the details), both were held accountable, apologized and eventually became good guys.

The question is very relevant for TSITP as well, because Jere's judged mainly based on his rebound being called cheating, even though it doesn't say much about his character or relationship to Belly, because it's a one-time reaction to Christmas 2.0 and he wasn't hurting Belly with reckless indifference. Then there's Staylor whom I can't bring myself to take seriously anymore, because apparently they both cheated not once but for years only because of Taylor's disposition to avoid vulnerability, and even though they eventually get character development just like Jonathan and Tyler. As to Conrad, I wonder how much of a red flag his taunting in S1 is, because he is stressed but not acutely and not by Belly who is particularly vulnerable, he doesn't apologize afterwards, and he has been taught to distinguish between right and wrong. But both he and Belly treat others with reckless indifference in S3, and both avoid taking responsibility, which means that they'll carry on like that.

ST and especially 13RW are in a completely different league compared to TSITP. I think by holding Jonathan and Tyler accountable for their wrongdoing and showing that they're able to redeem themselves they criticize the same behavior TSITP utilizes, i.e. framing outsiders as being creepy or inferior by disposition and humiliating them at every turn. I guess that projection is part of human nature and allows the bullies to go unchallenged (no pun intended). In these cases, the boys actually did something wrong though. What speaks in their favor is that they weren't hurting the girls with reckless indifference, acknowledged their wrongdoing, were minors, and that it was a one-time incident. But if they hadn't been held accountable and hadn't gotten alternative opportunities, would they have continued on that path?
