# Start with how you use the space

Good kitchen lighting does more than make the room look nice. It shapes how the space feels and functions every day. The best remodels combine task, ambient, and accent lighting in layers so you can prep food, host friends, and relax afterward.

The right lighting plan turns your kitchen into both a chef’s workspace and your home’s centerpiece.

# 1. Task lighting: where the work happens

Task lighting provides bright, focused light in areas where you need it most. Many homeowners rely only on ceiling cans, which leaves dark spots and harsh shadows on the counters.

A better setup includes:

* Undercabinet LED strips for clear visibility while cooking
* Pendant lights hung about 30 to 36 inches above the island for both style and brightness
* Recessed LED cans with adjustable angles over sinks and prep zones

Aim for a color temperature around 3000K. It feels warm yet clean and gives your kitchen a welcoming glow.

# 2. Ambient lighting: the comfortable base layer

Ambient light fills the room evenly and creates an overall sense of comfort. It connects the task zones with the rest of the space and prevents harsh contrasts.

Try these ideas:

* Dimmable recessed lights across the ceiling for balanced coverage
* A decorative central fixture if you have higher ceilings
* Soft cove lighting above cabinets to bounce light off the ceiling

Always install dimmers. You’ll want bright light for prep and a softer mood for dinner or evening cleanup.

# 3. Accent lighting: highlighting your favorite features

Accent lights make your remodel feel intentional. They draw attention to the special design details you chose, such as a backsplash, open shelves, or decorative range hood.

Some options are:

* Puck lights inside glass cabinets
* LED tape lighting under floating shelves or along toe kicks
* Small spotlights to highlight artwork or texture

Accent lighting adds warmth and depth, making your kitchen feel more like a high-end space than a workspace.

# 4. Why professional lighting design matters

Homeowners often underestimate how technical lighting can be. Fixture type, placement, ceiling height, and wall colors all affect the final look. A professional design-build team plans these details early, so you know exactly how the lighting will perform before construction begins.

At Phoenix Home Remodeling, our designers include lighting layout and 3D renderings in the design phase so homeowners can visualize brightness, tone, and balance before installation. It prevents surprises and ensures the lighting works perfectly with the overall design.

The best kitchen lighting isn’t one single fixture. It’s a combination of task, ambient, and accent light that creates beauty, comfort, and function in every corner. Plan your lighting early, use dimmers, and keep the color temperature consistent across all fixtures. Done right, your remodeled kitchen will feel bright, inviting, and ready for anything from morning coffee to dinner with friends.
