One. happy. moment.
I've had a rough go with our field. And today was a rough day in the public schools.
My student with ASD who is also a dual language learner approached me this morning.
This kid's mom (bilingual English/Spanish) has expressed her personal disappointment in her son's ASD and is not receptive to the Team's recommendations for SPED supports. The classroom teacher blames his dual language home environment for his academic needs:
"Well if they didn't try to make him speak in both Spanish and English maybe it wouldn't be so hard for him". (Sidenote: this part of the country has legit problems with cultural diversity in general -what to speak of cultural diversity in Speech Pathology as a field).
I prescribe to none of these adults' paradigmatic belief systems.
Everyday I greet him with Buenos Dias to affirm his Spanish and to see if he'll respond back. Usually he looks at me, remains silent, and walks away.
Today he came right up to me and said Bueno Dias. All by himself.
I could not be happier.
